The Provisional Central Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) dips its red banner in memory of Comrade Hari P. Sharma. He passed away leaving behind many comrades, friends and well-wishers all over the world on 17 March 2010. He was 75 years old at the time of his death.
A native of Haryana and born into a railway worker family Hari had gone to Canada in the sixties for higher education and job. He was a Professor of Sociology at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver till his retirement in 2000.
Anti-war demonsrations against Vietnam war brought him into the vortex of mass movements. In the wake of Naxalbari in 1967, he found a hope for India’s toiling masses and throughout his life he remained an activist in support of Indian revolution and the struggles of the oppressed classes and nations against imperialism and its allies.
He was the founder of Indian Peoples Association in North America (IPANA) and he mobilized the patriotic people of Indian diaspora in support of Indian revolutionary movement. During the emergency, he organized a campaign for release of political prisoners in India and played a major role in mobilizing public opinion against the emergency.
He was a eminent Marxist-Leninist and fought throughout his life against modern revisionism and sectarianism. After the collapse of the Soviet Social Imperialism and the restoration of capitalism in China, many people lost faith in socialism. But Hari Sharma had a firm belief in the ultimate victory of socialsm.
He was a great writer of stories and poems in Hindi as well as a good photographer. His artistic works had combined passion with revolutionary insight.
The people of India will ever remember this great son of the country.
